Generating climate refuge spaces and recovering ancestral practices in the face of thermal inequality in the city

Llaqtawasi (house of the people) dreams of creating a cultural climate refuge that expands across different areas of the Lavapiés neighbourhood and its surroundings towards Arganzuela. Through a network of community spaces, artistic interventions, and gatherings linked to the land calendars of different communities from the Global South, the project aims to generate spaces for care, shade, shelter, the recovery of ancestral practices, encounters, and reflection in the face of the climate crisis and thermal inequality in the city.

We imagine a Community hall, that it takes different forms in public spaces through mobile structures and can also be adapted to existing resources such as gardens, libraries, or social and cultural centres, transforming them temporarily, which is why we conceive it as a space itinerant, for the neighbours.

It is sought that this Town hall sustained by cultural and spiritual knowledge and practices related to the care of life and the earth, stemming from different communities that, after migrating to Madrid, maintain their different cosmologies; communities that, in turn, are among those most vulnerable to increasingly extreme temperatures and longer heatwaves in the city.
