An invitation to imagine 50 more years of democracy together
The 10th September we will present in La Casa Encendida Madrid the programme To confabulate more democracy, What does a call for proposals with €100,000 include? to support young people who wish to experiment, imagine or dream of more democracy.
One of the great contemporary.
Democracy, like the world we inhabit, also finds itself in this uncertainty. There are no longer clear majorities, societies have changed, and the Show He/She seems to dominate the public scene.
The proposal More democracy It has emerged against a backdrop of transformation and uncertainty surrounding democratic systems. According to the V-Dem Institute, which publishes annual global democracy indices, the world has seen eight consecutive years of democratic decline, and 74% of the population now lives under some form of autocracy.
In Spain, according to data from the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS), 72.6% of young people still consider democracy to be preferable to any other form of government (compared with 79.2% of the population as a whole). Against this backdrop, with More democracy we reclaim horizons of hope and for that reason we are launching this project with the aim of being able to creating spaces for experimentation and speculation for a more robust democracy. This is about supporting emerging trends or delving into governance labs that allow for later replication.
We set the next 50 years as our horizon and to that end we ask ourselves: if we have been able to live in freedom these last 50 years, what will it be like to live in freedom for the next 50? We are not looking for oracles, but for processes that help us to imagine that future yet to come, but above all we are looking for young people willing to think about how to strengthen the democracy that is to come.
At this meeting, in addition to presenting the call for applications, with moderation by Pablo Gastaldi, We will talk event on youth and democracy with the youngest mayoress in Spain, Uxía Oviedo; the secretary of the EPA! association and former member of the Advisory Council on Youth at the Council of Europe, Matías Rubio y Josefa Mesa, PhD student in Contemporary History and content creator.
We will also enjoy a performance in charge of Megane Mercury and we will discover the challenges facing democracy today through On the Threshold: 11 Challenges for Contemporary Democracy, a new fanzine prepared by Remedios Zafra, Fernando Bronco y Jaume Peris, from the Futures Laboratory of the University of Alcalá.
