The article recounts the genesis of Concomitentes, a non-profit cultural organisation that operates at the state level and invites groups from civil society to become promoters, “comitentes”, of a work of art. He then describes the methodology he works with, which was formulated in the 1990s by the artist François Hers, who sought a formula for reconnecting contemporary art with society. He then details the four current Concomitentes projects in the Canary Islands, Catalonia, Galicia and Madrid. Taking as an example the project in Galicia, which works on the cultural and architectural legacy of the García Naveira brothers, historic patrons of Betanzos, the article insists on the importance of elaborating strategies that can generate a participatory process around a historical heritage in order to enunciate a collective will.
