A posta en valor dos Montes Comunais, a súa visibilidade e a substitución xeracional serão o xerme da produção artística

‘Terra Común’ has been working since January 2023 together with the mediator, Natalia Balseiro, and the 84 community members of the community of Montes de Couso (Pontevedra, Galicia) in a process of mediation, which included walks through the territory, research, processes of debate, dialogue and participation or public activities, which ended with the invitation to Asunción Molinos Gordo as the artist who will develop the artistic proposal of the project.

The process of participation and mediation highlighted the present and future life of the mountains, the links with the territory and a unique way of life, which finds in this area not only a space for leisure and recreation, but also a source of wealth. Thus, far from imagining and planning its exploitation, the community's desire is to create a sustainable, multifunctional and self-sufficient model in the long term, from an economic but also social perspective, and, above all, an attractive model for new generations to take over and give continuity to this legacy of community management.

From mediation to artistic production

From this collective desire to give continuity to the legacy, an artistic commission was drawn up that will inspire the artist's work. Thus, for this generational substitution to take place, it will be necessary to give visibility to the value of community management of the forest and all that this is capable of producing for nature, the landscape and the environment, but also for the community of Couso and society in general.

This mediation process moves to a second phase and opens up to artistic production in which Asunción Molinos Gordo will try to understand the motivations of the community members, activating different workshops that will serve as a tool for reflection and connection between the artist and the community, as well as with other researchers and specialists in the field.

These meetings with the community of the Couso Mountains, the artist and the mediator will bring into play different methodological tools for research, exploration of the territory, knowledge of the Couso Mountains, creation of links with the local community, opening up conversations between the different people involved, and others that may be added to the process.

A process that will conclude in 2024, when the result will be publicly presented and inaugurated at the end of the year. The work will prioritise the use of natural elements based on nature; situating the mountains as a space for intergenerational encounter, and redefining the social recognition of this area and its memory.
