What is Concomitentes?

An opportunity to become a promoter of a work of art

We invite groups from civil society to become promoters, "comitentes", of a work of art. Everyone can be a commissioner, all you need is an idea and the desire to make it a reality.

Constituents can be, for example, the members of a popular association, a neighbourhood initiative, colleagues at work or simply a collective united by a common cause.

The desire to reactivate a once emblematic square or the resolution of a conflict was the trigger for a group of commissioners to negotiate with an artist to respond to this initial motivation through a work of art.

How does it work?

A mediated negotiation between citizen promoters and artists.

Any citizen's collective that has an idea or a desire for their community and the interest in dealing with it in an artistic way could initiate a project with us.

If it is concluded that there is a real interest in the context and a consolidated and committed group of principals, a mediator would join the collective to accompany it in the development of the project.

They would jointly delve into the initial problem and would then translate it into a commission for an artist to activate a production of a work resulting from this joint negotiation.

Why a work of art?

Art makes understanding possible where words are lacking.

At the start of each concomitance is a work proposal from a group of citizens, and their conviction that it is not only relevant to their collective but also to the context in which it is situated.

At the start of each concomitance is a work proposal from a group of citizens, and their conviction that it is not only relevant to their collective but also to the context in which it is situated.

Embarking on a project for the joint creation of a work of art requires a high degree of commitment from all the parties involved, as two or more years may pass from the first contact to the formalisation of the work. But, through this path, it is possible to generate a work of art with an affective link to the context that surrounds it.

What if I want to be a client?

The client can be any group of people united by a common problem that affects their immediate context. All you need is an idea and the will to make it happen.

For example, a group of people from Hernani who wanted to reflect on the use of gender in the naming of streets in their town, or a French pigeon fanciers' association who promoted this age-old tradition among the youth of his region.

The following were also principals Pritzwalk neighbours a town in northern Germany that was concerned about the decline of its historic centre, or a group of Italian women teachers who wanted to convert a disused chapel into a local archive.

From 1990 to the present day, thousands of people - from all walks of life and from rural and urban areas - have commissioned more than 500 works of art.

What do mediators do?

A project accompaniment from start to finish.

Concomitentes mediators, in addition to their knowledge of contemporary art, have a special sensitivity for mediating in participatory processes.

They know the social context of the projects and are in permanent contact with the different agents that operate in it, from public administrations to neighbourhood initiatives. They listen, investigate and - based on this experience - choose, together with the group of commissioners, the artistic proposal.

They help shape the artistic proposal, suggest artists, coordinate production and negotiate with the parties involved. Their aim is to ensure that everyone involved in the project is satisfied with the resulting work.

Who are the artists?

Professionals with their own artistic discourse and language.

The artists are professionals of recognised prestige, capable of developing their vision in close harmony with the group of commissioners. Regardless of the artistic field they come from, they take the commission as a starting point from which to bring new approaches to artistic production.

In Concomitentes, tangible works have been carried out such as the construction of a house-museum or the reform of a school. But awareness campaigns have also been designed, awareness campaigns have been designed, awareness campaigns have been set up, awareness campaigns have been set up and awareness campaigns have been set up. public sculpturesengraving, engraving video parts, made up of musical pieces and devised immaterial works that live on in the memories of the people involved.

The suitability of the resulting work, as well as its social acceptance, depends on the willingness of the entire network created around the project to contribute their knowledge and encourage joint collaboration.

How do we govern ourselves?

Concomitentes is a non-profit cultural production company, founded in June 2018, by Fran QuirogaThe current co-ordinator, Felipe G. Gil (ZEMOS98), Veronica Valentini y Sören Meschedetogether with Julia Morandeira.

In addition to the founding members and members of the board of directors, Concomitentes has a board of trustees that oversees the mission and vision of the entity, and which is composed by Soledad Gutiérrezart curator; Antonella BrogliaItalian publicist, cultural promoter, trainer, lecturer, TV presenter and actress, expert in political communication, public speaking, entrepreneurship and social innovation; Tere BadiaSecretary General of Culture Action Europe until 2022; Anastassia Makridou-BretonneauNouveaux Commanditaires de la Fondation de France, mediator; Arantxa Mendiharatco-founder of Deliberativa; and the lecturer in the Department of Art History at the Complutense University of Madrid, Selina Blasco.

The project puts at the centre the constant accountability of its work and activities, through a active intersection with citizenshipThe project is in line with the needs and social urgencies of the environment in which it operates and contributes to the change and evolution of society through the tools and resources provided by art and culture.

Who finances it?

Concomitentes is maintained through private and public support and subsidies.

The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation is the founding patron and strategic ally of the project. New CommandersConcomitentes is the driving force behind the initiative in Spain. Concomitentes starts with a solid support that guarantees the basic financing of four national partnerships, as well as the organisational structure of the project, even though the realisation of the works requires alternative financial support.

In this phase, the mediators also look for possible sponsors in local, regional or central administrations, as well as private patrons. The groups of patrons do not provide money, but act as promoters of their own idea and propose possible allies who can contribute to the production of the work.

The resulting work, financed by private and public subsidies, becomes the property of the group of patrons. Its value is determined by the use and symbolic importance given to it by the community in which it is inserted and by the ties and network generated as a result of the whole process.
