Concomitentes opens Micelio, its call for participatory arts

Micelio - IV Call for Participatory Art has opened this Thursday 13th February. The first phase of the call will close on 16 March.

The call seeks to launch a new participatory art project for a mediator, together with a citizens' group, to respond to a pressing problem in their environment, following the methodology of Concomitentes.

Concomitentes launches the fourth edition of its call for participatory art, aimed at groups of people - of any age - who want to undertake a participatory process throughout 2025 and 2026 to investigate, through art and culture, a collective desire or environmental conflict with the help of a mediator.

The procedure for the submission of proposals shall consist of two phases: a first approach/definition phase initial project (with basic information on the idea), and a second phase of development for five selected proposals. This second phase will be remunerated with €200 (taxable base).

Proposals will be received from anywhere in Spain.

Who is this call addressed to?
Concomitentes is looking for a group of citizens who want to respond to an environmental problem that is affecting their immediate environment through a work of art. To this end, a working group will be created consisting of two fundamental agents within the Concomitentes action protocol:

1. Group of principals: A collective made up of people of any age, origin or connection who have a common goal. People who operate in a specific territory or context and have a claim, idea or desire to improve their community through an artistic project. The collective can be formal or informal, legally registered as an association or not.

In the event that the citizens' collective does not have contact with a mediator/agents from the cultural sector who can accompany them in the process, may be submitted independently by raising Concomitentes will assist in the search for and selection of a suitable mediator for the objectives and needs of the project, should the project be selected.

2. The mediator: A person who assumes the role of mediation, which is understood to be that of a professional in the cultural and contemporary arts sector specialising in curating and cultural management, who also has a special sensitivity and empathy for mediating between social collectives and artists, experience in participatory cultural practices and in the integrated management of projects. This person must also be familiar with the local context in which the project takes place.

The budget for this year's edition increases

The winning project will receive a 40,000 budget line, 14,000 of which will go towards the fees of the mediator and 26,000 euros for the production of the work and fees for the artist who will be selected in the final phase of the project, after the mediation process. The duration of the participatory art project is estimated to be 18 months, once the resolution is communicated.

Why “Mycelium”?

The mycelium is a subterranean network of interconnected life that demonstrates the amazing ability of fungi to cooperate and communicate. More than simply exchanging resources, these networks actively interpret and respond to their environment, demonstrating that interdependence is key to life. Like mycelium, people build systems of exchange that connect us and allow us to negotiate and inhabit the planet cooperatively between human and non-human communities. That is why this call, focused on the connection between people and their environment and the care of the planet, adopts from this edition the name of Mycelium.
