The tales of milk, a project co-ordinated by Ana Escariz P\u00e9rez and Ana Moure Rosende, was born in A Ulloa (Lugo) with the aim of disentangling the nature-cultures connected to milk and defending the territory, through a form of cultural rearguard action, against extractive threats such as that posed by the Altri-Greenalia macrocellulose plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a year of work in which, from the project itself, actions such as the extension of the Ulla River in the December 2024 demonstration<\/a> Or or a performance action 2060, to Ulloa who has already arrived<\/a>, The group of clients decided to invite the artistic collective Futurefarmers to create a piece of art that would engage with the threat posed by the mega-pulp mill that the company Altri intended to build in A Ulloa. The work was to propose a desirable future without detaching from the past, and at the same time, leave a material imprint on the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Futurefarmers began working with the digestive process of cows, one of the few organisms capable of digesting cellulose. In this shift of focus towards the more-than-human, the collective posed a central question: how can cows, pastures, flowers, or soil be made into active agents in a movement to defend and care for territory? Could a cheese protect a territory?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This chin is not an island<\/em>, the work with which the collective responded, proposes to understand cheese not as an isolated object, but as the result of a network of relationships between species, territories, and conflicts. The work is made up of several material elements: a cheese, a wheel, and a time capsule. Together, these form a device, a relational object that allows a usually individual process \u2013 the care of the cheese \u2013 to be transformed into a collective act, making visible and expandable the network of care that sustains it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first cheese made for this cheese, which is not an island, was made with milk from the Zebra cow, from the Cea Cea family, which grazed in September 2026 on the lands contiguous to the Quintas Estate, where Altri intended to set up, and in its stomach digested communities of microorganisms that inhabit this land. This \u201cactivist\u201d cheese, and those that followed it, travels on wheels, from village to village, carrying with it the memory of the naturoculture that shapes it. The wheel containing the cheese moves with the help of its carer. In each place it visits, it celebrates the community receiving it. With its three metres in height, the wheel, built to transport cheese, embodies the circular gesture used to shape it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wheel and the chin will continue, until the group of beneficiaries wishes it, their journey through the territory: from house to house, from carer to carer, following a logic of community circulation similar to that of the Virgen del Perpetuo Socorro in Palas de Rei, thus activating a living narrative of care, memory, and territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
